People are at the Heart of SEM

In Spring 2016, SEM achieved its first Investors in People Award- a Bronze. We are very proud of this tremendous achievement, as of the 14,000 companies in England that have attained the accreditation, less than 3,000 have achieved a Bronze accreditation or better.

People are at the heart of our company and investing in the development of our colleagues is fundamental to us working together to deliver quality motors on-time. This commitment is reflected in our TogetherBetter programme; focussing us on organisational development through employee engagement. We are delighted that the work of all our staff has been recognised following a very detailed series of investigations and 35 interviews across the entire company.

There are many elements of the feedback that we celebrate, especially because the assessor recognised the challenging sector in which we operate and the broad impact of the change we are going through. in particular, the ‘extremely generously resourced’ learning and development budget at SEM was highlighted, plus the community and individual care focus of both staff and SEM. The high standard of our employee value proposition- i.e. the benefits and facilities we offer here- were also highlighted in our report.

in keeping with our ethos of continuous improvement, SEM will be aiming for further accreditation in 2019 when we are reassessed, but this time we will go for gold!

What is the Investors in People Standard?

Investors in People is a flexible, tailored and easy-to-use people management standard. It helps achieve business objectives by developing and harnessing the skills of our people. The framework is outcome focused, outlining what you need to achieve but never prescribing how it should be done. All assessments are independent and rigorously audited.

Investors in People and TogetherBetter

SEM’s purpose is to ‘develop, manufacture and supply World-class servo motors to our valued customers by continually improving our product & processes. In order to achieve this we need to attract, develop & retain the best people’. TogetherBetter has been designed to help us work towards this alongside recognising the value of our people. Investors in People provides us with the opportunity to review and evaluate our TogetherBetter programme, along with current policies and practices, against a recognised benchmark. We are particularly focussing on the framework for planning future strategy and action, and a structured way to improve the effectiveness of training and development activities.
