Learning and Development

SEM believe that excellence is at the foundation of why we are a motor supplier of choice for our customer. We maintain this through investment in the skills and development of our staff, from in house courses such as IOSH Managing Safely and Forklift Truck training, through to external courses such as Mental Health First Aid for line managers, all the way up to Masters level qualifications for our in-house experts. Excellence is in our DNA, and we are proud to be the best at what we do.

IOSH Managing Safely

This course is delivered in house to everyone with line management responsibilities, to discuss how health and safety can positively impact SEM business activities. It is run over the course of a week and so far we have a 100% pass rate! You can see some of our happy graduates from the picture.

NVQ Level 2 Business Improvement Techniques

Last year we saw our first group of employees go through the new and improved Business Improvement Techniques NVQ training. The training is run by the LEAD group, and is paid for by the government. It covers topics such as problem-solving, visual management and other core skills through interactive class sessions with an experienced trainer. Also included are functional skills sessions, which go over how maths and literacy skills can be used at work and in general life. Completion of the training results in a Level 2 NVQ, a nationally recognised qualification.

Once these topics are covered, they are put into practice through an improvement project. The trainer supports with all the steps of project managing this, including identification of project, scoping, planning, implementation and evaluation. The year of learning is topped off by a presentation to the other group and senior managers about the results of the project.

One of the groups looked at a number of options before agreeing on a project to improve the degreaser area. This addressed safety– by reducing manual handling and presence of swarf; quality—by reducing the risk of contamination of parts; delivery– by enhancing visual management of WiP; Cost– reducing waste; and people– by updating the training required for the area.

Level 3 Diploma in Engineering

We have a member of staff completing the above qualification as a foundation for further study within engineering and specifically technical drawings. This will take two years to complete and is based around an online course. SEM have supported with this by allocating one half day per week for study and time off during exam periods for study leave. In the future we would expect many more of our staff to partake in this kind of development, particularly if they have not pursued further education after leaving school.

ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership and Management

To assist any employees with internal promotions, we enrol those with line management responsibilities on to a leadership course run by the manufacturing body EEF. This combines six sessions offsite with a professional trainer, plus coursework linked to challenges being faced within their roles.

Association of Accounting Technicians Qualifications (Level 4 and above)

In line with our core value of excellence, we belive that everyone in the company in support roles to production should also be at the cutting edge of their profession. For this reason, we have sponsored, and will continue to sponsor, the progression of our accounts team through their AAT exams. This ensures that we have the latest expertise within the company and can continue to be the motor supplier of choice, whilst supporting our colleagues on the shop-floor in the best way possible.

Masters Degree

Over the last decade we have provided support to members of staff in key roles within the company who are looking to gain the technical, specialist expertise in their area to enable them to provide the best possible support to colleagues here. This has either been through distance learning or part-time courses with SEM providing financial support and study leave for this.
